Jo’s Sunflowers

Jo’s Sunflowers

Jo’s Sunflowers
2018, watercolor on cold press paper, 16×19″
This painting is based on a beautiful photo by my friend Jo, in response to her call to “all van gogh’s.” I painted it during a difficult time when the airwaves were filled with crappy news and dedicate it to Jo’s inimitable spirit. Once again I had to face my fear of petals and leaves (there are just so damn many of them, and foreshortened sunflowers are a pain to get right). In the end I loved every thing about this composition. Painting that pitcher with its bulbous belly and celadon sheen was unbelievably fun. I also couldn’t help conjuring up A. Wyeth throughout the process. For that, and so much more, I thank Jo.
